  • 1858 में उंगलियों के निशान को पहचान बनाने वाले ब्रिटिश विलियम जेम्‍स हर्शेल का जन्‍म हुआ था।
  • 1914 में आज ही के दिन प्रथम विश्‍व युद्ध की शुरुआत हुई थी।
  • 1925 में हेपेटाइटिस को का टीका खोजने वाले बारुक ब्‍लमर्ग का जन्‍म हुआ था। 28 जुलाई को विश्‍व हेपेटाइटिस डे मनाया जाता है।
  • 1976 में रिक्टर पैमाने पर 8.3 की तीव्रता का भूकंप आने से लाखों लोगों की मौत हो गई थी। भूकंप से राजधानी बीजिंग के उत्तर-पूर्व में स्थित शहर तांगशान तहस-नहस हो गया। ग्रेट तांगशान भूकंप जान गंवाने वालों की तादाद के हिसाब से 20वीं सदी का सबसे बड़ा भूंकप है।
  • 2005 में आइरिश रिपब्लिकन आर्मी यानी आईआरए ने आधिकारिक तौर पर अपने सशस्त्र अभियान को रोकने की घोषणा की।
